The Power of Now

The Power of Now

How often do you live in the past thinking about and regretting something you did days, weeks, and years ago? Did the regret do you any good? If it caused you to act differently today, or to reconsider what you are doing with your life in the present, then maybe some good has come of it.

For the most part living in the past is a futile effort that serves no good purpose. The past is dead, and the future has not yet occurred. All that we have is the present. We are pure act only in the now and there is great power in that.

What does it matter what foolish or harmful action you took in the past if you can do nothing to change it? Why live a life of regret and remorse if you are not using those emotions and feelings to change how you are living today?

Focus on the here and the now. It is the only place in which you will ever exist and be able to make a difference. Everything you do right now matters more than anything that has come before or is to come in the future.

Now is when we can make a difference, and only now. Every now is a chance to change our lives for the better and make a difference in the world. What are you doing today? Are you sitting around feeling sorry for yourself? Are you making excuses for why your life cannot be different? Are you allowing yourself to be held back because of some past mistake or because of a fear of some future state that you cannot even be sure will come to exist.

No one can change the past or predict the future, so why waste time living in those places in your mind? Instead, focus on what you have to be grateful for today. Be thankful for all that you have that is good in your life now and use what you have today to make your life what you wish it to be.

Be conscious of what is going on around you now instead of living in some dead past or some imagined future. Not to be morbid, but your future may not exist at all except for the impact you have made today. We cannot know what the future holds for us or when our time on this earth will come to an end, so better to make the best use of the present, live in the present, and take all the enjoyment you can from where you are right now.

I am not promoting a philosophy of hedonism. On the contrary I am promoting a philosophy of purposeful action making the most of the power each of us has at our disposal – our current circumstances. No matter where you are in your life, as long as you are alive and present in the current moment you have the ability to achieve a life of worth and purpose.

Our focus should be laser sharp on what is before us right now and what in our life today gives positive meaning. We should focus on those positive things in our lives and find ways to give value to all the people we come into contact with daily.  Circumstance is not in our control, but how we react, and change as a result of circumstance is completely in our control – it is our great freedom that we are in control of our actions in light of reality.

Today you are alive. No matter where you are in life there is some good that you can choose to focus on and make it the focus of what you are doing right now. Your power lies in the present – do not linger on what you have done; learn from it. Do not let your image of the future hold you back for the future has not yet occurred and you have no control over the circumstances of your life. Let the past be a guide and allow yourself to dream a future of the greatest good, but act in the now savoring every moment.
