Power over Self

Power over Self

Imagine the world we could create if instead of worrying about what other people are doing, or not doing, we instead focused on the things in our own lives that need work. The world of politics is about using influence to gain power over other individuals. It is the goal of politics to control people and force them to do what one group of people want them to do.

We spend so much of our time and energy concerning ourselves with the things that others do, that in the bigger picture of life, if we simply left them alone, would have no effect on our lives. Yet, why do we think that we need to concern ourselves so much with how others live? We would do better to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask ourselves a question – where can I improve and how will that make the world better?
We need to realize that the only things that we have complete control over in this world are our own thoughts, feelings, and actions. This is where our true power and freedom really lay. So if we really wish to have a positive effect on the world wouldn’t we be more effective starting with ourselves rather than trying to change other people.

We need to be an example of the change we wish to see in the world. We can make no greater case for change than if we embrace it ourselves, live it ourselves, and allow our lives to be an example for others. Laws make criminals of men, but rarely change their inner lives, which is where true change needs to begin.
We don’t like to look in the mirror and see our own faults. It is easier to criticize others and then try to make rules and laws that force others to change. This type of attitude does nothing to make the world better. It only creates animosity between different people, each vying for power and looking for ways to push their own agenda of change on others.

If we are going to create a just, fair, and peaceful world we need to look hard at ourselves, examine our motives, and make those changes in our own lives that we wish to see in the world. We need to take ownership of our own lives and stop worrying about the fault in the lives of others.

Once we gain mastery of ourselves, then maybe we can look outside ourselves and ask others to change, but it is very unlikely that any human being can ever achieve complete self-mastery in a lifetime. Our goal should be constant self-improvement. Our focus should always be on our own thoughts and actions.

Imagine the change and transformation that would take place in our world if we changed the focus from improving others to improving ourselves, if we allowed every person to an opportunity to fail or succeed based on the measure by which they choose to improve themselves rather than on the artificial restrictions placed on them. Imagine if we took ownership of ourselves and did not shrug off our own responsibility to our own lives.

We all come into this world alone and leave this world alone. We are born helpless creatures dependent on others for our very existence. As time goes on we learn the skills and knowledge we need to survive on our own. A few rare humans never stop growing, learning, and developing and become really self-sufficient and self-actualizing human beings. Many give up early in life and instead turn their focus to everyone else, not wanting to look at themselves.

Be that rare person who never stops growing and learning. Keep striving to become self-sufficient and realize all that you were meant to be. Turn your focus to improving yourself and turn your focus away from the things you believe are wrong in the lives of others. Be an example of love, justice, and peace and live that example for the rest of the world to see.
