Can a Billion Dollars Buy Happiness

With the Powerball Lottery expected to surpass the billion-dollar mark it got me thinking what I would do if I won a large sum of money. It also got me thinking if I would really want to receive that large of a sum of unearned money at all.

You might think I am nuts, after all who wouldn’t want a billion dollars? Well, let me ask this – can that amount of money buy happiness?

Yes, a billion dollars would set a person up for life and make it so that you never had to worry about money issues again. You would be able to purchase anything you want, and do anything that you want. All your wildest dreams could be realized.

But how would it change you as a person and how would it change your relationships with other people? Would it bring purpose and meaning to your life?

For some people that large a sum of money would be ruin. If you are a person who is prone to addictions and have lived a life of indulging your urges it might push you to a life of excess that could lead to damaging behaviors.

If you are a self-centered and indulgent person that sum of money may isolate you and make you believe that you are better than others, damaging relationships and leaving you feel alone and without purpose.

My point is that money does not give life purpose. Money does not enrich the soul. Don’t get me wrong without money life can be difficult and stressful, but just because you have money does not mean you have happiness.

Happiness has to be cultivated from deep within the individual. It comes from living with purpose and value. It is born of living a good life that enriches not just the self, but others as well.

If money can buy happiness, then what is it about you right now that is so lacking as not to be able to achieve happiness? My guess is that for those unhappy with their lives a lot of it has to do with a lack of self-worth, and that is something money can’t buy. We must be grateful for ourselves and the lives we have been blessed with before we can find happiness in material things.

Gratitude leads to happiness, and gratitude can be practiced no matter what your financial state. Gratitude is a state of mind, a state of being that can be developed and nurtured through daily meditation and practice, and it cost you nothing.

Feeling, acknowledging, and appreciating what is good in our lives in the here and now allows us to feel joy and happiness. On any given day we can focus on the ten things that are going wrong, but if we take that negative energy and instead focus it on just one thing that is going right it can completely change our mindset and attitude.

You may be unhappy in your job, in your current relationship, in your current financial situation, but don’t forget you are in charge of your life. You cannot control the circumstance of your life or the outcome of every action, but you can control your thoughts and actions in light of whatever reality you face.

So you have two choices: one is to see the negative, give up and let life run over you, or you can acknowledge the negative, find the positive and then move forward with gratitude for what is good, affirming that good and letting it inspire you to focus on taking action on the things you do have control over.

Winning the lottery would take away all the financial worries of life, but once you are financially stable what would your purpose in life be? What can you do today to find purpose and meaning even if you aren’t a billionaire? What do you have to be grateful for right here and now?

Be grateful for being alive and able to take your life in any direction you want. Live a life of purpose and meaning, one that brings value to the world and creates a world of peace. Engage in positive thoughts and actions believing in your own self-worth. Money is good and necessary, but meaning comes from within your own sense of self-worth and the value you bring into the world.
